Castles Design and Defense - Secret Passages

Though this is not a castle trap door its still a trap door! (couldn't find a real pic!)

Secret Passages – What Medieval Castle be without secret passages? Many castles had secret passages and they served alot of purposes. Some passages were designed as escape passages during a siege, some lead to a well or a storage room for food and some were set as traps for the enemy.

Hidden secrets of the stairwells 2- There is also another secret behind medieval stairwells, none of the stairs are even. This increases the advantage of the warrior. Castles Design and Defense- The hidden secrets of the stairwells 1#

The hidden secrets of Stairwells – Stairwells were very distinctly designed in Medieval Castles. Stairwells that curved up to towers often curved and in a clockwise direction. This meant that the enemy would have a difficult time swinging their swords and the defenders had their sword hands on the outside wall which gave them more room to swing.

Castles Defense - Concentric Circles of Defense

Concentric Circles of Defense- This method can be seen in many medieval castles throughout the world. This method is a series of traps which work their way in throughout the castle. For example their could be trap doors, moats, draw bridges and small holes where archers could shot an arrow without being seen, if you look above this castles floor plan is a great example of the concentric circles of defense.
